Hanbok Day at the Palace

Of all the field trips in a GB Camp week, the hanbok visit to Gyeongbokgung Palace is the one campers talk about most. Here is how the day went.

After a short van ride from campus, the group stopped at a hanbok rental shop near the palace. Choosing colors took longer than the fitting itself. Once everyone was dressed, we walked through Gwanghwamun Gate together, and the guards at the gate became the first photo of the day.

Inside the palace our guide walked the campers through the throne hall and the pavilion by the pond, explaining in English and Korean what each building was for and who lived there. Wearing hanbok also means free admission, which the kids thought was a very good deal.

The afternoon continued at the National Hangeul Museum next door, where campers traced the letters they had been practicing in class all week. By pick-up time the hanbok were back at the shop and the photos were on their way to families.

Field trip destinations can change with the weather, but every camper gets two trips a week. See the GB Camp page for the full week-by-week schedule.
